How it felt for months, even years, of your family to be separated and have no idea whether you and your country fornord will ever see? That was the fate of thousands of Free State and Transvaal citizens during the Anglo-Boer War prisoners taken.
Veldkornet Charles von Maltitz's remarkable diary provides a glimpse of what the prisoners in camps in Green Point, St. Helena, Ceylon, India and elsewhere through. For most it physical hardship and emotional hardship brought, for some even death.
His observations sketch he gets a picture of everyday life in the camp: the men remained engaged, their relationship with their British guards and how the political struggle between the hands-uppers and the diehards in the camp continued. There are also some shocking revelations about Farmer Women's infidelity during their men's detention. fornord
Von Maltitz's lovely sense of humor also make for pleasant descriptions of fellow prisoners and camp conditions. It is his humor that saves him when he unsuccessfully tried to escape from his camp in India and then for weeks in solitary detention.
