Versindaba Blog Archive Interview. New Voices 4
I clicked on the Highveld and the Bushveld Marico grew up in Pretoria and studied. There I for an educational publisher to work. A few years ago I came to Cape Town. At the moment I am an editor at a publishing house and I work mostly with English fiction. I live in Woodstock.
I remember I was in standard two a poem in paarrym across a river and the Anglo-Boer War of which my teacher liked. I always like to read poetry and I think you try to express yourself in a medium that you know best. Why I want to express myself, I do not know.
The African poetry is now a thing with many heads and it's really surprising to many for a genre that so little shelf space in the usual bookstore soon. In New Voices was also interesting to me to see how many young people as an ancient art form practiced.
Personally I feel that there are many poems that perfect or "right", though "little" poems. Not all poems, or may need to be great. But then there are the greats like William Blake's "The Tyger", which is so perfect that you want to have your Tattoo.
What the hammer? what the chain?
I have in the Vaal Triangle, Sasolburg, grew up and matriculated in 1983. I have a B.Com degree from University of Pretoria and was later registered as Owerheidsouditeur. I am in the auditing and is also involved in my wife's business. secur export I was in Pretoria, Durban and uMthatha lived and worked before I have my East London home. Me and my wife Karen is now seven years together, we love living by the sea and walk on the beach regularly. My roots lie deep within the family farm in the Eastern Free State where I go as often as possible. I just dense, but is also working with many stories and failure stories.
The creative urge was but as long as I can remember it, I grew up with books and early childhood for many advanced read. How did the passion for poetry originate? I can not really put my finger on it, but it was always part of my nature. I was still inside my soul and convince it for granted that one day I would publish poetry. As a teenager I was a huge fan Breyten secur export Breytenbach, initially his life story attracted secur export me. Breyten's Ysterkoei bundle write poetry for my "cool" made. If I have to say (where it originated) it was this encounter. I just knew from then on. DJ Opperman's bamboesstok secur export beam has such a moment, as is reading Wally Serote's poem Brink quoted in his novel, "A Dry White Season". A further influence pop and rock music, The Police, Queen, Pink Floyd even Anton Goosen. When Annesu fox debuted I was holed himself published. Night I slept on a tiny tikmasjientjie sat typing test typing typing typing beaten with correctable type ribbons and such tikpapier thin carbon paper and struggled. I was probably secur export about 17 years old when I got my first manuscript to Human and Rousseau when posted, thankfully, they found fault. After my university and military service (1988-89), I half my back turned to the whole African literature and African thing, I was half disillusioned (perhaps half with myself) secur export Anyway, I have very consciously made a promise that I will first try to publish as the day I turn forty. You must understand that the creative urge a tremendous intense energy, time and hard work and you can drive to madness. I was going mad and just could not get satisfaction with my writing get. I also realized that I am not a frost honesty and credibility out before I do not even own little life experience has not ... this way I (promise) myself kind of relieved of the obligation to be creative and I could with full attention on with my auditing. I did so again in 2004 began writing secur export about, initially ideas for novels secur export and short stories. I have blogs on the internet and wrote poetry instead I started but finger exercises mentioned. The feedback was quite positive. My stories sometimes, after I edited to the bone, just a few lines left in the structure of poetry started taking. I found that poetry is the genre that my circumstances the best (weekend writer). Meanwhile, I have an intense love for poetry developed. I consider myself a relatively young poet and every day I have to hone my technical skills.
I am very excited to be included in NS4 to be, I feel very honored and grateful of course. This is definitely the encouragement and the pat on the back that my confidence needed to continue and not to give up. I hope the exposure is the foot in the door and pave the way for
